Our artistic partner in the EMCCINNO project, the Association of Cultural Heritage Managers (KÖME), is developing an experimental site called INTERNÉP in Budapest, in collaboration with the artist co-op Pneuma Szöv. The Budapest pilot serves as a vibrant example of how art and community collaboration can spark sustainable change by mapping and shaping the ecosystem around the People’s Theatre (Népszínház) street. INTERNÉP creates platforms for locals, institutions, artists, and cultural practitioners to jointly develop heritage narratives, co-create public spaces, and promote sustainable practices in their shared neighbourhood.
This multicultural artery, once anchored by the eponymous People’s Theatre, has long connected diverse populations across Budapest. Today, through artistic and community programming, INTERNÉP breathes new energy into this iconic street by organizing workshops, festivals, and storytelling projects that invite residents and visitors to reimagine local space and heritage. By transforming local heritage and daily life into a living laboratory for climate-aware, creative regeneration, the Budapest pilot puts culture and collaboration at the heart of neighborhood sustainability. Documenting and sharing its evolving methodology, the EMCCINNO partnership serves as an inspiration for similar initiatives throughout Europe.
