Limiting global warming to 1.5°C requires ambitious actions. The EU has committed to reach complete decarbonization by 2050. Current policy tools and institutional frameworks, however, have proven to fail to realize the necessary transformation. Therefore, we think that developing, communicating and then implementing innovative approaches aiming to reach carbon neutrality by 2050 are vital. Veronika Kiss has been dealing with formulating ambitious energy and climate policies since 2007. Currently, she has contributed to the development of an innovative simulation game, called Decarbonise!, where teams represent countries aiming to reach carbon neutrality by 2050.
The game, nevertheless, does not only consider success as in cutting CO2 emission, but also pays attention to performing well in other environmental and socio-economic fields. Namely, teams need to strategize in a way to perform their best in the given five environmental and socio-economic success indicators. Through this game, applied in climate campaigns, played in different research, practitioner and decision-maker phora, we would like to raise climate ambition and spread innovative solutions to climate emergency.
